General discussion for aviators

Who among us had/has a parent who flew/flies?

Just curious how much "trickle-down" aviation there is among us?

My father flew, that is how I got started. We never owned a plane of our
own, only rented. I got my first plane ride when I was three.
He was my first passenger upon passing my PPC checkride and J3 checkout.
I got to fly him to Oshkosh for his first trip there.

Food.

If one doesn’t like airline food, can you still become an airline pilot or
corporate pilot.  What is the food situation?
Thanks

Hello Dahli

So I’m in Tucson, AZ this morning, doing a walk around and getting ready to
mount up and fly back to homebase after a great little sunrise XC hop
(really amazing sky today…huge God’s Eye shafts of light through
virga…awesome…) and I’m also pausing every couple of minutes to snap
some photos of the AZ ANG F16s doing thier thing when a Tucson Police
Officer saunters over and asks if I plan on departing within the next 10
minutes or so…  Inwardly, I’m girding myself for the discussion that I was
sure was to come…

As it turns out, the Dahli Llama (yes, THAT Dahli Llama…) was in town and
the immaculate G5 (which I got a good photo of…) near the GA terminal was
waiting for him and would I mind waiting until his party was loaded up?  I
was so suprised to find out what all the fuss was about (I thought I noticed
a higher number of police cars parked near the base of the tower…and then
there were those secret service-looking types who just may have been
speaking into their cuffs…), all I could do was just say, "Sure, No
Problem."

Nice thing is, the same Police Officer and one of the security detail both
came over and thanked me for waiting the extra five minutes.

Got the ATIS, got my clearance and had a great flight back…

Just another day in the wonderful world of aviation…

Feeling a bit holier today,

Flying clubs in Oakland or Concord?

I just moved up to Berkeley, CA to attend grad school. Before that, I
lived in Silicon Valley and flew out of Palo Alto. I’ve been flying
with a club there, Sundance, since ’99 or so and I’ve been pretty
happy.

But the drive to KPAO from Berkeley is a bit long. I’m looking to see
if anybody has recommendations for clubs at KOAK or KCCR.

About me: I’m an instrument-rated private pilot, with about 300 hours.
I was working on my commercial rating when I moved. I’ve got about 15
hours complex time, all of that in a 172RG. For fooling around, I’ll
take a 172 or an Archer, and for "trying to get somehwere" I usually
opt for a C182.

I’m looking for a club with a variety of aircraft, low rates, good
maintenance, decent enough avionics to make IFR practical, and
connections w/ good instructors so I might finish my commercial. (which
is admittedly on the back-burner with school on).

Any advice?

avionics fraud on ebay

A friend told me he was looking for a handheld GPS on ebay and found a guy
selling Garmin 396 handhelds for $500.  This friend emailed the seller
asking how he could sell a new in the box $2500 unit for $500.  The seller
replied in broken english with a bunch of mish mash that he just opened an
electronics company in Europe and that if you send $500 by western union
right now then he’ll make you this great deal.  Beware out there.  If it
sounds too good to be true…..

VFR Sectional Mural

Our airport terminal has a VFR Sectional Mural of the United States,
taking up one entire wall of the pilot lounge. I’ve searched online, but
can’t find such a product. Does anyone know if it exists or where to
find it?

Yet another PP-ASEL privileges question

Pilot A:  owns a plane and does aerial photography for a business, but
does not have a current medical or BFR.

Pilot B (me):  current private pilot w/medical.

Can I legally fly Pilot A’s plane on an aerial photography flight (with
him in the right seat) if I pay half the expenses, which in this case
would just be gas?  Sounds like it would require a commercial
certificate to me but I thought I’d throw it out there.

Do the aviation authorities have some sort of disciplinary action plan for
cases like that?

I’d hate to fly with a pilot who declared an emergency just so he could run
home to watch his football game.  That calls for at least cancelling his
pilot license.  Probably some jail time too.

BFR.. define "rated".

Pinging the group for an answer here.

Scenario: Up for flight review, elect to have instruction in a
taildragger for the purpose of the flight review. Have a PP-ASEL, but do
NOT have a one time endorsement in tailwheel aircraft that permits one
to be PIC.

The regs say you must take the flight review in an aircraft that one is
"rated" for. Does rated apply to "category and class" or is there also
the need to meet tailwheel, complex or high performance as well (when
applicable)?

The part 61 FAQ’s dont address the reviewee needing to have a tailwheel
endorsement specifically, only the reviewer/CFI.

A320 with gear problem over LA

As I write this at 4:50 pm pacific time, there is a Jet
Blue A320 circling with a nose gear problem. It’s rotated
90 degrees.

The news is carrying live video of the plane, but details
aren’t fixed. It may be landing at Long Beach or LAX. It
was bound for JFK from Burbank so it has several hours of
fuel on board. There’s talk about dumping fuel or burning
it off, but again the reports aren’t clear.

Jet Blue flight 292.

Oh, and the talking heads are really a laugh. "So I take it
the nose gear on all big jets can turn?" duh….how do you
think they steer?
