For the last 2 weeks I have been using the Ill. St. U. weather machine
system to retreive and view hourly weather images in .gif format. These
have been great! I use the radar surface images with pressure contures
and sigmet info as well as satelite images of the area of interest. I
have even down loaded the images and converted them into .fic format and
run them as a movie, such as they do on the weather channel. I also can
print these out on a laser or dot matrix printer as a hard copy. I use the
hard copy as visiual reference when talking to FLight Service. To do this
you need a application that supports gopher services. I use Mosaic which
is free from many site’s on the net. Then a freebee gif viewer off the net
as well. These are windows apps so you need that too. I also use UNIX
versions as well. ANy questions on how to set up drop me a line.

Weather stuff off the net, info pack to come.
Howdy,
Due to great number of responses this posting generated and the great
service it provides, I will create a general ‘How to’ artical. I am
sorta strapped for time so it may a day or two to complete. Will keep
all posted on the progress. :^)

Cloud information…where do I find it?
A friend of mine is wondering how to get daily information regarding the
elevation of the *tops* of clouds. He can find information about where the
bottoms of the clouds begin, but cannot find out where they end.
Where’s a good place to look for this kind of info???
BTW, please email me because I don’t normally monitor the aviation groups.

interesting stops/sights in MO, KY, TN, IN, IL
I’ll be travelling from College Station, Texas to southeastern Ohio next
week. I’m soliciting recommendations for atmospheric airports, nifty
places to see from the air, good places to eat, reasonable fuel, possibly
a spot to camp under the wing. I’ll be in a 180-hp conversion Cessna 172,
VFR. My routing will have to be flexible, but will likely be over
Arkansas, Tennessee, maybe southern Missouri and southern Illinois,
southern Indiana, and Kentucky.
After talking to other pilots, I have stopping places near each end of
the trip, but would really appreciate suggestions for western Tennessee,
Kentucky, and southern parts of Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. I hope
to take different routes up and back.

I would never rely on a magic box for collision avoidance. Your eyes and
a good traffic scan is your best defense.

GA over the airlines?
In article <2vjjij$…@search01.news.aol.com> edwi…@aol.com (Ed Wisch) writes:

I fly from West Lafayette, Indiana to (a) Ann ARbor, Michigan and (b) Columbus,
Ohio several times a year. In our club C172, I can make either trip for
about $160-$175 (we charge $40/tach hour); occasionally, I’ve rented a
Duchess from the local FBO and end up paying about $400. By comparison,
Northwest has a commuter flight from Lafayette to Detroit Metro; RT fare
is $497, with nothing cheaper for advance purchase. And, of course, I
still need to get to ann arbor from metro. To get to Columbus, I’d need to
fly out of Indianapolis, which is a 65 minute drive. Fares were several
hundred dollars the one time that I checked. So, GA is cheaper; I usually
take along a co-pilot and that’s how I maintain instrument currency.
Finally, I can make the trip to Ann Arbor on Northewst and still have
time for business, but not to Columbus. From march to mid-November,
I’ve been able to make about 90% of my planned trips. The rate
drops a lot in winter–to about 50%–because of forecast icing. The
people that I’m meeting are used to this and appreciate the flexbility
of arrival and departure times tht I get with GA.
