Re: Carb ice on final (was: Dump flaps…)

In all the lists of what to do on engine failure although pull carb heat is in
there all the time I feel that it should be the first thing to be done. My reason
is that if the engine failure was caused by icing the engine is now cooling and
you want to get the heat into the engine as soon as possible. As soon as it goes
quiet pull the carb heat. That way you maximize on the possible effect of that
action.

Military jet ride info needed

A friend of mine wants to know of any places in the U.S. which gives
rides in military jet aircraft. Like the Russians do with the Migs for a
LARGE some of money for instance. She asked me to look into this for her.
Any info much appreciated.

FAA Medical — Sleep apnea?

Does anyone have any information on whether sleep apnea would be grounds
for suspending a pilot’s medical? My husband has recently been diagnosed
and is being treated with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
device.

Thanks in advance!

Re: WWW.FLIGHT.COM Back and Kicking A**

I’m looking for a checklist for a C172N to keep me from forgetting things when I rent
one here. When I looked through Josh’s huge list of files it looked like there might
be something useful, even if not exactly right…

>Current File List: May 16th, 1995
>ftp/pub/checklists
>ftp/pub/checklists/c172pw.chk

I downloaded these two files and tried looking at them… the first didn’t make any
sense to my PC, but looking at it with a hex editor disclosed strings like "SIT",
"STAKWILD", and "C172P W&Bsit". I guessed, and our local Mac guru confirmed, that this
appears to be a Mac file compressed with Stuffit!. He further hazarded that it might be
a Hypercard stack. However, we couldn’t make it uncompress… all we got was an alias
called "V" which didn’t alias anything!

Anyone know what format this file is in? Will it be any use to me (a PC user) if I
can unpack it?

Frank.

Boston (Beverly,Hanscom,Tew Mac) Clubs

Hi,

Does anyone know of good deals at either Hanscom, Beverly or
Tew Mac for clubs (or rentals with easy availability for trips)?

I’m mainly interested in lower-end (read cost) planes.  152′s, 172′s, P140, etc…

I currently rent out of Beverly.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Re: Piper Malibu Accidents (Why?)

In article <3peds2$1…@news.gate.net>, ma…@gate.net (Russell McGinnis)
asked about the rash of high-altitude accidents in Piper Malibus.

I believe the NTSB decided that the accidents had been caused by loss of
control because of erroneous ASI readings after pitot icing.  Most of the
pilots were fairly low time, not instrument rated and not used to flying
at altitude in conditions conducive to icing, so it was postulated that
each and every one forgot to switch on the pitot heat.

One of the last incidents never reached the status of accident.  Hearing
the exchange between the controller and the pilot of an out-of-control
Malibu, a commercial pilot who was on frequency suggested that the pilot
turn on the pitot heat.  He recovered before the big crunch.

[All that from memory rather than written sources, so please forgive any
errors or omissions]

Part 141 vs 61 Inst. Training

Anyone have any comments on the practical differences to the would be
instrument student between a part 141 training curriculum and the old
standby part 61?  My instructor mentioned in passing that they (an FBO,
not a school per se) had the option of doing a part 141 training program
if I wanted.  I didn’t have the time to ask questions right then, but do
plan on it shortly — what of it?  Is there any compelling reason to go
for 141?  Is there any reason *not* to?  My quick look at the regs
suggests that 141 has a lot less left to CFI descretion — true?
