Support San Jose's Reid-Hillview Aiport on Feb 20th

On Tuesday, February 20th, the San Jose City Council will review its
position on the proposed closure of Reid-Hillview Airport.  The council
has been on record since 1990 supporting the airport’s closure.  AOPA’s
bringing its annual convention to San Jose this year has provided the
necessary leverage to force the council to reconsider its position.

If we can get the city to reverse its position, we can then focus on
getting the county of Santa Clara, which owns and operates the airport,
to stop wasting money on closure studies, and perform much-needed
maintenance.  For many years, the county has neglected the airport, and
has even refused nearly $1 million in FAA funds for repaving ramps and
taxiways.

Show your support for Reid-Hillview Airport by coming to the council
meeting at 7pm on Tuesday, February 20th, at San Jose City Hall.  If
you can’t attend in person, call or write your councilmember and say
that you support the continued operation of the airport.

Husky handling?

Has anyone any experience flying a Aviat Husky?  I am intereseted in
buying one of these but I ahave heard some negative things about it.

How does it handle?  I have heard over the years  that you can’t get a
full stall landing due to insufficint elevator or forward CG.  And that it
is difficult to land, hard to flare correctly despite person in the back.

Any comments?  It sure looks well built.

Pls e-mail AirLoo…@aol.com

Software Override

I’ve been following the Airbus vs. Boeing discussions on this and
other newsgroups.  There have been quite a few posts stating that
the "facts" show that the Airbus viewpoint has contributed to
several accidents.

Since I work at the Software Engineering Institute, and am also a
pilot, I’ve taken a rather particular interest in this issue.

I’d like to know the sources that show these "facts" (ie, NTSB reports,
FAA reports, foreign agency reports, studies etc. specifying
crash causes that have directly or indirectly been attributed to
the pilot’s inability to override the flight software, or the
software placing too much constraint on the pilot).

Note that I’m NOT saying I agree (or disagree) with either side
in this debate. Both side have produced some interesting points.
Rather I’d like to see how much hard source information is out
there to perhaps lead to some work here at the SEI .  This is just
fact finding at this point.

Finally, I’m not limiting this to Airbus aircraft only; I’m interested
in any commercial aircraft accident where the cause was placed on
the software.

Thanks

Syracuse NY – pilot shop?

I’ll be in Syracuse NY next week and would like to pick up some Jeppesen
sectionals (or similar) at what I presume will be lower prices than in
the UK.  Can anyone tell me where there is a pilot shop or equivalent
outlet in that neighborhood that would have a selection?

PS I’m transiting through Newark NJ so if there’s an alternative near
the airport there that might do.

Dominican Republic Landing Fees

I am informed that La Reforma has a $1,300 landing fee
for a King Air C-90. Does anyone know of a more reasonable
fee for a nearby airport?

Folding Kneeboards-THANKS!!!!

After reading a lot of posts, I took the advice of the majority and
ordered one of Sporty’s Aluminum Flight Desks (VFR version, only
difference in VFR and IFR is the info label on the right side.)

I was pleased to see that it folds "backwards",  not inwards like a
book.   Therefore when you fold it open, it cannot fold closed and slip
between your legs.  Two sturdy clibboard type holders, one on top on the
right side and one sideways on the left side.  couple of sturdy
pen/pencil holders.   It is lightweight, and the folding action is
semi-stiff, and when open gives the feel of a very sturdy flat table.
Foam non-slip pads on the bottom keep it from sliding off of your lap.
I think I may like this better than the velcro strap around my leg on my
other kneeboard.

I think this is exactly what I was looking for.

Regarding the light, I opted for the AOPA Beam&Read in the AOPA section
of Sporty’s catalog, and it is great!  You can set it flat (it is
square, about the size of a deck of cards) on your map and swivel the
light beam, or hang it around your neck and swivel the light beam.  4 AA
batteries will run it a long time, and it has a spare bulb in the
battery compartment.  About $15.

Thanks very, very much again for those who posted suggestions and
recommendations!

regards,
Gary
