Well folks I thought I would get around to thanking you all for the
camping tips. I really appreciate them.I have compiled them to this, a
follow up post of all the suggestions.
Unfortunately work, dental emergencies and the resulting medication have
prevented us from making the trip as planned. Damn!! Perhaps in the
fall we will get to it. Between the two of us we will be out of town
until late September.
I hope to survey a few of the sites over the next few weeks while my
girlfriend is out of town. Then I am off to Oshkosh and the East Coast
until September.
Thanks again to everyone, here are the posts in no particular order.

Check out Shelter Cove. There is camping and a small camp store a
couple hundred feet from the runway. The mountains are beautiful, the
tide pools are amazing, and the parking is free. Have fun!

Georgetown (Q61) has a nice campground on field with restrooms and
showers. There are others too, but I’m not sure what facilities (if
any) they may have.

Some of my favorite places include:
1) Pillsbury Lake (Gravelly Valley- 1Q5), a nice long one-way dirt strip
at a state park, with campgrounds. The nearest campground is a short
walk from the strip, but a much nicer one is about a 1 mile hike down a
dirt road, with campsites overlooking the lake. The lake has a boat
ramp, and a fair ammount of recreational boating happens. There is also
trout fishing.
2) Alpine County (Q82), a nice paved strip in the Sierras, on the west
side, southeast of Lake Tahoe, on a ridge above the Carson River. It is
an easy 30 minute downhill hike to the river from the strip (going back
not so easy :-}). Lots of camping sites. Watch density altitude!
3) Ruth (Q95), a nice paved strip with a somewhat tricky approach. There
is a motel, dude ranch (Flying something Ranch), and campground. I
suggest a straight in, rather than conventional pattern, since this
strip is in a very narrow valley, with high terrain nearby. Use your
judgement.
4) Trinity Center (O86), by Trinity Lake, which has excellent fishing.
There is a resort at the Lake which has a variety of services from boat
and jetski rentals to a motel, to campgrounds. They will pick up at the
airport, very nice folks. Beautiful huge lake, pretty alpine forest,
excellent fishing.

Len is perfectly correct about 1Q5; its one of my favorites as well. A
couple of words of caution though. Holiday weekends (I was there
on a labor day) tends to bring out the local rednecks and the camp
grounds
may not be overly tranquile. I, however, camped with the plane and had
no
problems. Another thing is that is, well, gravelly. Not the sort of
place particularly if you are paranoid about your prop.
My top favorite (which hasn’t been mentioned yet) is Georgetown.
They’ve
got camping near the runway that may even have showers by now.

Well, I’ve been "hoping" for an airport in my backyard for some time,
but if you want to go airport hopping and camping, O17 (Oscar
Seventeen) in Grass Valley has a very nice campground, picnic tables,
brick BBQ, tall piney trees, and a 24 hour plumbed potty. Sorry, no
showers.
Best of all, free.

There’s a privately owned campground at Shelter Cove that is about a
three minute walk from the south tie-downs…

Maybe a tad far, but it is hard to beat our airport. We have an airpark
on the field with water, phones cooking and camping, right where you
park
your A/C and it is free. Pretty good 11,000 foot paved strip, (2) 3500
ft. strips and a 5000 ft. float pond. Fairbanks International, Alaska.
PAFA for the Jeps GPS. It’s a nice trip.
The weather here is upper 70′s this time of year and about 23.5 hrs of
daylight. Gets a bit hotter in another few weeks. Beware, you won’t
want to leave after you have been here.

Georgetown, NW of Columbia is superb–camp sites right off the runway,
showers, and a really friendly airport crowd. Highly recommended!

Shelter Cove is great if you can wait for the fog to clear. Georgetown,
just east of Sacramento (Approx 2000 ft level in the hills is very nice
for camping if the temps are mild. I think you can also camp at Trinity
Center, which ouught to be nice since the lake will be full this year.
Hope this is of some help and not redundant.

Prospect State Airport, in Oregon just southwest of Crater Lake, is
excellent.
Beautiful turf strip with large campground, and a short walk down into
town.

Benton, O85, in redding has a nice little camping area and is a short
walk to town.
My wife and I fly camp quite a bit and our absolute favorite is Shelter
Cove. Kindof out of the way for your trip but worth it if you like the
coast.
Montague-Roher field 1O5, has grass in front of the flight shack for
camping; not much else around but a beautiful view of Mt Shasta. Also
can probly camp at Mott field 1O6, in Dunsmuir.

Kevin
