Where to send chart updates?

I want to send a correction to a sectional chart to the NOAA via email.
Does any one have an address?  I’ve found the homepage for the NOAA Aeronautical
Charts Division but there is no provision for sending comments.

In the past I’ve sent corrections by snail mail but I want to move into the
90′s :-) .  BTW, each time I’ve sent a chart correction I received a phone call
from the NOAA personally thanking me for the correction.  Pretty impressive.

Color blindness

Yesterday I was at the doctor’s office to get my 3rd class medical.
Everything was fine and dandy until I started to have hard time to
see the numbers on the book that they show. It turns out that I am
partially color blind. I mean I can distinguish green from red but
with some colors it wasn’t easy to identify the numbers.
I have passed the medical but they put "not valid for flight
color signal control or night flight" on my medical.
I am completely sad and confused now. I was planning to go all
the way to ATP. Does this mean that I won’t be able to fly now? (I
assume that noone will be willign to hire a pilot with night flight
restrictions)
Comments and suggestions by anybody with similar experience
will be greatly appreciated.

First Solo

It happened today 7/2/96.  Randy Hulet did solo this day and yes I am
thrilled!    As I was on final approch in a Cessna 150, 50 feet off the
deck my instructor called the tower and said this will be a full stop!  I
must admit it was not my best landing.  I taxied to the tower and
dropped her off.  I taxied back to runway 33. Took off with out without
any problems made two touch and go’s then a full stop.  Flying has been a
dream since I was 8 years old.  I am 40 years old now so you can imagine
how excited I am!

Vulgarity

The problem with the analogy of "turn the channel if you don’t like what you
see" is that there is little else to turn to.  Yet we don’t want to have to
turn the set off, because we want to be able to use the set, and we feel we
have a right to view programming that uses at least some modicum of decency.
The same goes for forums such as this one.  The net may not have been
intended for children, but it has now become a media for everyone, so I feel
people who use it have a duty to act appropriately, just as one would in a
public place, as mentioned by another who posted.  I’m not for banning
anyone, I would just like to see people try to use language more appropriate
to the situation.

I don’t consider this whinning, but rather, I’m just exercising my right to
express an opinion, as stated by those who defend those who use profanity to
express their opinions.  I simply choose not to use that kind of language.
I’m not all that offended by those who use profanity, but I am better able to
respect a person who does not use it.  It tells me that that person chooses
his or her words carefully before they speak and that they care about the
sensibilities of those around them.  Restraint breeds respect.  As a flight
instructor, I would have very few students if I used a lot of expletives in
critiquing a students performance.  That would also be exercising my right of
free speech, but what good is that if it puts me out of business?  I find it
odd how people’s comments can become so venomous on forums such as this.
Seems to me one would be better able to make their point using reason and
trying to educate others about why they hold a particular opinion, rather
than using the ‘F’ word, or calling someone a facist.  When discussing
similar matters with people face-to-face, I seldom hear such meaness in the
conversation.  But in a relatively anonomous arena such as this, the gloves
seem to more readily come off.

In the above analogy about turning the channel, if more people expressed
their opinions about the sorry quality of programming, maybe TV would clean
up its act just a little bit.  So why shouldn’t people here express their
opinions if they don’t like profanity?  Or is that privilege reserved only
for those who see things differently?

My intent in writing this was not to offend anyone, and my apologies if I
did.  Like I said, it’s simply my opinion.  However, I’ll probably get flamed
for this by someone who feels it is perfectly OK to use profanity and venom
to express an opinion when such language is uncalled for and the opinion
could probably be better expressed without it.  I can take it.

What constitutes a good emergency kit?

I fly over dry land and some of that is over forested areas.
When flying over sparsely populated areas, I usually start
thinking about my emergency gear;  what is adequate?

I carry a 2-man dome tent and one sleeping bag as well as a
small first-aid kit.  Also, carry a fire extinguisher.  I’m
thinking that a good thing to add would be water and some
sort of dry food.

Anyone have experience/thoughts in this area.  For me, weight
is always a factor, so I can’t carry the kitchen sink with me.

Camping summary & thanks

Well folks I thought I would get around to thanking you all for the
camping tips.  I really appreciate them.I have compiled them to this, a
follow up post of all the suggestions.

Unfortunately work, dental emergencies and the resulting medication have
prevented us from making the trip as planned.  Damn!!   Perhaps in the
fall we will get to it.  Between the two of us we will be out of town
until late September.

I hope to survey a few of the sites over the next few weeks while my
girlfriend is out of town.  Then I am off to Oshkosh and the East Coast
until September.

Thanks again to everyone, here are the posts in no particular order.

Check out Shelter Cove.  There is camping and a small camp store a
couple hundred feet from the runway.  The mountains are beautiful, the
tide pools are amazing, and the parking is free.  Have fun!

Georgetown (Q61) has a nice campground on field with restrooms and
showers.  There are others too, but I’m not sure what facilities (if
any) they may have.

Some of my favorite places include:

1) Pillsbury Lake (Gravelly Valley- 1Q5), a nice long one-way dirt strip
at a state park, with campgrounds.  The nearest campground is a short
walk from the strip, but a much nicer one is about a 1 mile hike down a
dirt road, with campsites overlooking the lake.  The lake has a boat
ramp, and a fair ammount of recreational boating happens.  There is also
trout fishing.

2) Alpine County (Q82), a nice paved strip in the Sierras, on the west
side, southeast of Lake Tahoe, on a ridge above the Carson River.  It is
an easy 30 minute downhill hike to the river from the strip (going back
not so easy :-}).  Lots of camping sites.  Watch density altitude!

3) Ruth (Q95), a nice paved strip with a somewhat tricky approach. There
is a motel, dude ranch (Flying something Ranch), and campground.  I
suggest a straight in, rather than conventional pattern, since this
strip is in a very narrow valley, with high terrain nearby.  Use your
judgement.

4)  Trinity Center (O86), by Trinity Lake, which has excellent fishing.
There is a resort at the Lake which has a variety of services from boat
and jetski rentals to a motel, to campgrounds.  They will pick up at the
airport, very nice folks.  Beautiful huge lake, pretty alpine forest,
excellent fishing.

Len is perfectly correct about 1Q5; its one of my favorites as well.  A
couple of words of caution though.  Holiday weekends (I was there
on a labor day) tends to bring out the local rednecks and the camp
grounds
may not be overly tranquile.  I, however, camped with the plane and had
no
problems.  Another thing is that is, well, gravelly.  Not the sort of
place particularly if you are paranoid about your prop.

My top favorite (which hasn’t been mentioned yet) is Georgetown.
They’ve
got camping near the runway that may even have showers by now.

Well, I’ve been "hoping" for an airport in my backyard for some time,
but if you want to go airport hopping and camping, O17 (Oscar
Seventeen) in Grass Valley has a very nice campground, picnic tables,
brick BBQ, tall piney trees, and a 24 hour plumbed potty.  Sorry, no
showers.

Best of all, free.

There’s a privately owned campground at Shelter Cove that is about a
three minute walk from the south tie-downs…

Maybe a tad far, but it is hard to beat our airport.  We have an airpark
on the field with water, phones cooking and camping, right where you
park
your A/C and it is free.  Pretty good 11,000 foot paved strip, (2) 3500
ft. strips and a 5000 ft. float pond.  Fairbanks International,  Alaska.
PAFA for the Jeps GPS.  It’s a nice trip.

The weather here is upper 70′s this time of year and about 23.5 hrs of
daylight.  Gets a bit hotter in another few weeks.  Beware, you won’t
want to leave after you have been here.

Georgetown, NW of Columbia is superb–camp sites right off the runway,
showers, and a really friendly airport crowd. Highly recommended!

Shelter Cove is great if you can wait for the fog to clear. Georgetown,
just east of Sacramento (Approx 2000 ft level in the hills is very nice
for camping if the temps are mild. I think you can also camp at Trinity
Center, which ouught to be nice since the lake will be full this year.
Hope this is of some help and not redundant.

Prospect State Airport, in Oregon just southwest of Crater Lake, is
excellent.
Beautiful turf strip with large campground, and a short walk down into
town.

Benton, O85, in redding has a nice little camping area and is a short
walk to town.

My wife and I fly camp quite a bit and our absolute favorite is Shelter
Cove. Kindof out of the way for your trip but worth it if you like the
coast.

Montague-Roher field 1O5, has grass in front of the flight shack for
camping; not much else around but a beautiful view of Mt Shasta. Also
can probly camp at Mott field 1O6, in Dunsmuir.

Kevin
