Fliers access to Boston

Thanks to the many fliers who contacted me on this question.

From the north, Hanscom (BED).  There’s bus service (MBTA bus #76) that
connects with the subway system (the "T"), although it is about a 40
minute ride until you get to the subway.   It goes to the Alewives station
(red line), which will take you to Fenway.  See <http://www.mbta.com> for
fares and schedules.Try calling Executive flyers at Bedford 617-274-7227.
Oh, the bus doesn’t run on Sundays.

Logan is ultra-convenient, although bad if you want "cheap" — landing and
ramp fees will eat you alive; they start at $35 or so each.  If cost is no
factor, Boston-Logan is the best alternative. The total is $43.50 for
landing and minimum ramp fees.

The most fun thing to do (especially if you can find someone familiar with
Boston) is to take the Free Airport Shuttle (it’s only free within the
airport NOT to and from the airport) from the GA Terminal to the water
taxi. Take the $7 water taxi across the harbor (it’s a very short ride)
and walk to Quincy Market (the progenitor of the various port city
renovations like the New York South Street Seaport).

Then walk to Government Center (Boston City Hall), 5 minutes, and take the
Subway (the "MBTA" a/k/a the "T") [Green Line] to Kenmore Square.  Fenway
Park (home of the Red Sox) is a short walk.

This sounds like a lot of walking but the total walking for all "legs"
(somehow an appropriate term for walking) is about 25 minutes.

Taking the subway back, you need not take the water shuttle since there is
an Airport stop on the Blue Line.

When you depart Logan, ask if you can overfly Fenway Park before departing
the area.

When arriving at Logan, plan to arrive off-peak. Logan is really not THAT
busy off-peak. If you are arriving VFR, plan (if possible) to arrive from
the WEST rather than the North or South. Most jet arrivals flow
North-South. Also because of the parallel nature of the runways, a West
arrival can actually get you from altitude to terminal without ever
crossing or sharing an approach path with a jet (no separation headaches
for controllers).

As I’m coming from the south, I decided OWD (Norwood) (Class D) was the
best way.  Inexpensive to overnight.  Can take a taxi to the Norwood RR
and then train into Boston and Fenway (change to local subway.  Whole trip
is easy.  Call The Mass Bay Trans Authority (800-392-6100) or Norwood Air
At 617-769-5054 for information.

It is usually easy to get tickets to the game,  unless it is a Yankee/Red
Sox game. The box office # is: 617-267-1700.

If you do arrive at South Station then you do take the red line to Park
St. and then The Green Line to Kenmore.  It will take you about 30 min at
most.  Kenmore is 3 blocks from Fenway.

You can also get off at Back Bay Station and walk 4-5 blocks and catch the
Green line (at Copley),  Kenmore is only 2 stops from there.

Hope this helps.

Civil Air Patrol

I have considered looking into the civil air patrol as a means to build hours
and experience.  I’m wondering if anyone here is/was  a member, and could tell
me a bit about it.

Are you a membert?  Is this a good way for me to get some flight time?  Would
you recommend the CAP?

Thanks,

Bill Sofield

Speal Airshow Pitts Crash – NTSB sez

I saw the front page of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette yesterday
(Wednesday) which carried a story about Clany Speals crash at the Pittsburgh
Three Rivers Regatta.  They quote the NTSB investigation team.  I was
standing in line in a drug store, and cite the front page only from memory.
The NTSB says Speal’s Pitts was built in 1974.  They had
completed their inspection of the remains of the aircraft.  The crash
resulted from left wing failure at a crack in a spar.  Several spar cracks
were found which should have been found in ground inspections prior to the
flight.  Other safety defects weree found which did not contribute to the
crash.  They were about to start inspection of the aircraft log books and a
review of maintainence.
The maneuver was not a loop, but a dive, pull-up to climb with snap
rools on the climb.  As someone noted, the video shows them to be rather
sloppy, which is not suprising if a wing is coming off.

VNY pilots: I'll pay for gas!

Or even rental time!  I’m a student pilot with 10 hours who is willing
to pay for gas for people willing to fly places.  Why?  I can use some
practice on basic air air stuff like flying straight and level without
bobbling, etc.  (I wouldn’t ask about landings or takeoffs, of course).
Besides, I’d love to just fly someplace — right now, all my lessons are
just that — lessons.  It’s all work and no play!

If you’re interested, send me email :)

NEED PILOT – SAN DIEGO

Hey!  I am intersted in a flight along the Baja for myself, one
companion, and some sailing gear.  Dates flexible.

I like to go windsurfing at a little spot called Punte San Carlos.  It is
about 1/3 of the way down the Baja on the Pacific.  It takes about 8
hours to get there by car from San Diego, due to the roads, police
checks, etc.  However, there is an airstrip at the Punte which a number
of people use, and I understand it is about a 1 1/2-2 hour flight in a
single prop.

What would it cost to have you fly us down, then pick us up 5 or 6 days
later?

Please e-mail me at commu…@rof.net

Thanks
