Public Aerobatics – a Disaster waiting to happen…

I have long expressed my opinion that public displays of low level
aerobatics entails risk vastly out of proportion to any benefits,
perceived or real… Aerobatic displays do not improve public support
for general aviation nor for the preservation of local airports…
Aerobatic displays do not foster a favorable opinion of general
aviation among the lawmakers of this country – who are exquisitely
sensitive to the mood of the public… And the carnage albeit
infrequent, only reinforces the perception among the insurance
companies that any form of aviation is an underwriting loss just
looking for a place to happen… I simply do not see any benefits to GA
stemming from low level displays of aerobatics in front of the general
public…

flying clubs in Tampa

Hello everybody:
I am possibly going to move to Tampa, FL, and I was looking for flying clubs
in the area. I visited the couple of airports in the area (vandenberg and
Peter Knight) and asked about rental rates in the FBO, but I much rather
join a flying club, rent from them, contribute to the maintenance of the
aircraft, and help with he club, etc, etc as I have done in my flying club
there.

What are my options?

Safety at 141 school

HI:

If I’ve posted this to the wrong group, please forgive me and point me
in the right direction.

I am employed by a Part 141 flight school.  There is an employee here
(working as an AC dispatcher) that has been caught in numerous safety
violations.  Ususally, it’s assigning an AC to a student  while that AC
is currently under a "maintenance hold".  This of course has
potentailly disastrous consequences.

We have a computer system that helps protect against such mistakes from
happening, but this person is so "clueless" that it doesn’t matter.
They just keep making the same mistakes over and over.

I have brought this to the attention of senior management at the
school.  However, for some reason they seem reluctant to do anything
about the situation.

The person involved has numerous complaints against them from
instructors and students alike.  I am beginning to think I should get
the FAA involved before someone is hurt or killed. The safety
violations are documented, but only "unofficially".  I suspect that if
the FAA comes calling, my management will simply destroy any evidence
and claim there is no problem.

This person really needs to be fired for total incompetence, but if I
"blow the whistle", I can probably kiss my own job goodby.

Any thoughts/opinions??

Flight plan hell, Tales of filing an ADIZ flight plan

I filed an ADIZ/FRZ flight plan yesterday that went to the wrong Center.
Not once, not twice, not three times, but four times. It turns out that
even if you file with Leesburg FSS for a DC area ADIZ plan it can be
automatically routed to the wrong facility.

I called Friday evening checked weather, notams TFR’s, etc. and filed
two flight plans. One ADIZ fro the next morning to get from Culpeper to
Frederick, MD and then onto Grimes (8N1). Great place.
www.goldenageair.org The other was for Sunday afternoon Westminster VOR
(EMI) to Hyde Field (W32) where my job is based. Yes you can file for
more than 24 hours in advance. The first flight plan went off without a
hitch. I called Sunday morning to file my work related super secret
flight plans and check on my previously filed flight plan suspicious
that it was already gone. It was still there!

I took off out of Grimes around 12:30 to pick up ADIZ flight plan over
EMI around 13:00. I arrived over EMI at 13:05 and called Potomac
Approach. He could not find the flight plan. I waited a few minutes and
called again. He said it was still not there. I was pissed! I believed
it was lost and landed at Carroll County. I called Leesburg and Asked to
speak to the supervisor. He told me it was there and sent it again. I
took off confident that it was finally there. Upon climbing out I called
Potomac once again and he told me it was not there. By now I was truly
upset. I was going to be late for work. I thought they were screwing
with me. Some of the controllers know my voice since I fly the ADIZ/FRZ
so frequently. Some also do not like me. Improper service results in a
phone call to QA/QC.

Knowing I had a flight plan in the system, I called  Leesburg again on
the air to air. The quality of their transmitter was poor and this added
to the frustration. I finally got the message across and she once again
transmitted the plan. It finally had come through. I was able to finally
get one my way towards Hyde Field with the requisite "remain clear of
Class B and FRZ". Once I landed and parked I called Leesburg and asked
to speak to the supervisor. He recognized my voice and starting
apologizing profusely.

It turns out that the default routing code for Flight plans originating
at Westminster (EMI) is New York center. Huh? EMI is 20 or so miles for
Baltimore? He went on to explain. In order to streamline things New York
center has control of  flights from EMI north, includes EMI. Potomac
hands off directly to New York Center, taking Washington Center out of
the loop. A very short loop for Jets. To get around the flight plan
routing problem Leesburg has to manually change the routing for the
flight plan to make sure it gets to Washington, DC and then on to
Potomac. They failed to do this four times.

I asked him where to send the bill. he said "you can send it here but we
don’t have any money to pay it."
So next time you file from the north over EMI Make you the Briefer
enters the correct routing code so you flight plan is available.

I regret to say Bobby Younkin flying his biplane Samson and Jimmy Franklin
in his jet-powered WACO were killed in a mid-air at an airshow at Moose Jaw,
Saskatchewan.  Here’s further details:

Re: CFII instructor as passenger (FAA)

It IS possible for an instructor to give dual instruction without
logging (or being) PIC.

In one instance, I did some instrument training in my aero-club’s
Grumman Tiger. The instrument instructor I used was not yet checked out
in the aircraft type in the club. So, from a club insurance point of
view, he was unable to be insured as PIC in that aircraft at that time.

I HAD been checked out by another instructor, and on his suggestion, we
agreed that I was the PIC for the entire flight, and that he was
providing instrument instruction.

Renter Insurance

Ok Gang!
Who has the best rates for renter’s insurance? I need 25,000 hull
liability, and pretty much basic injury and such. And a second question, do
any aircraft insurance companies allow payments like car insurance companies
do? Avemco’s rate is $390/year, which is not bad, but they want it all up
front…which means I could not use the insurance because I couldn’t afford
to fly for a few months! ;) Kinda defeats the purpose doesn’t it!!?
