Airplane Taxies Into Car: Video Footage

Airplane Taxies Into Car: Video Footage
A airshow pilot’s worst nightmare happens when he taxies this classic
World War II tail-dragger right into a parked car.

Travel to Hyannis

Any recommendations for flying into Hyannis (KHYA)?  It’s in my plans for
next week.

I have to admit: I’m a little worried about it.  I saw on the Jepp plate
that one must contact airport ops, before shutdown, for an escort.  That
doesn’t sound friendly.

Thanks…

In-ear headsets

A year or so ago I bought audio headphones from Sony (Fontopia) that
impressed me greatly with their small size and audio quality.
Furthermore, they block out most external sound.

So I got to thinking about whether something like this would be a good
alternative to heavy and uncomfortable headsets for flying.

Lo and behold, there are now a few headsets out on the market that are
variations on this theme – extremely light, in-ear. Supposedly as good of
noise reduction, passively, as many ANR headsets.

Yet I can’t find any actual reviews of these headsets anywhere.

So for a recent long x-country, I decided to make something of my own,
since I didn’t want to spend $500 or so on an unknown headset.

I used an impedance adjusting transformer and a couple of plugs/jacks to
adapt the earphone to a standard stereo audio jack. I then plugged in my
in-ear audio headphones. A short flight with them (using the hand mike)
seemed to indicate that this might be viable.

I then tried to figure out how to get a mike attached so that I could use
the earphones without a hand mike. Although I’m not completely happy with
my solution, I bought a PC headset mike unit and cut off the existing
mike; attached an aircraft mike to the end and wired it up. So I wear the
headset with the one-side earpiece *over* the in-ear earbuds.

I just flew >30 hours with this setup. Findings:

- Overall, much more comfortable than my Telex Echeleon ANR headset
– I can now wear a hat when I fly
– Ear buds sometimes tend to want to fall out. I sometimes had to push
them in a bit more to re-seal for sound blocking. I might need to go from
the medium to the large seals.
– Noise reduction probably slightly less than the Telex, but not bad
– Too many cords with the PC headset, the adaptor, and the earbuds. Need
to tie-wrap.

Overall, this was a good experiment and I really liked the in-ear
approach. Before I spring for $1000 for a Bose, I’d really like to know
how the ~$500 in-ear units work. Anybody have any experiences with one of
these?

Pylon 8 problem

Hey, all, I’m having a problem.

Before the winter weather grounded me for a couple of months, I was nailing
Pylon 8s (for the commercial test) almost from the moment they were
demonstrated to me.

Now I’ve got everything else down, but the easiest *$@#^&! manuever of them
all for me is suddenly giving me trouble.   Now, all of a sudden, I can’t
seem to keep my turn radii rational.  Ie, I used to have no problem keeping
the reference point at its place on the wingtip but now my turns are wide
and I keep having to correct.

I’ve tried shortening the distance between reference points, reducing power
slightly and adjusting my altitude, but what I really want to know is what
exacty I’m doing wrong all of a sudden.  My instructor, unfortunately, isn’t
around this week and I won’t be able to consult him before my next practice
flight.

Any tips?

GPS in Europe

With Europe developing it’s own Galileo "GPS" system, I was wondering
how common GPS usage is in Europe in small General Aviation aircraft?
Also, how common is it with the Commercial Carriers? How common are GPS
approaches? Are the GPS approaches scheduled to become Galileo
approaches?

International Flying

May be doing some international flying soon and want to get started on
my homework before doing so.  When I was in college a professor showed
us a website that did a good job of informing a pilot on the rules of
flying internationally.  It provided info about flight plans,
airspace/airport fees, and customs.  Does anyone know of this site or
one like it?

Anyone here know Driggs, Idaho (DIJ)

I was flying though Driggs, Idaho at 1.5 feet last week in a rental car
(2,500 miles in 11 days — jeeze a plane would have been nice!) and was
surprised at the very professional airport we passed.  Several Biz jets,
lots of big hangars, nice facilities.  I was wondering what was in Driggs
that could support that kind of airport.  Anyone know the area?  There
didn’t seem to be any major industry around except agriculture.  Just really
curious.
