Carrying glasses?

Someone told me a while ago that if you have a "must wear corrective
lenses" restriction on your medical and wear contacts, that you have to
carry a pair of regular glasses while flying.  Is that true?  And if so,
does anyone have a reference?

Passports Required Starting Jan 8

Anyone entering the United States, even from Canada, the Caribbean, or
Mexico, will need a passport beginning January 8. This will be true
even for infants; the old cut-off was 14. Also, a child needs the
permission of both parents to get a passport, which should be all kinds
of fun for single parents.

This is not the appropriate forum to discuss the wisdom of this policy.
Pilots should be aware of the rules, though, especially if they are
planning any international flights next year.

EAA Chapter 1093 Pancake Breakfast Sept 17

Come on out and join us for our final pancake breakfast of the year at
EAA Chapter 1093′s Education Center located at Midland, Michigan’s
Barstow Airport (3BS) which is 11.3 on the 317 radial of MBS.  That’s
about 20 miles NW of Saginaw and 20 miles West of Bay City.

There are quite a few home builts on the field and more under
construction.  At present I believe we have 17 members either already
flying their plane or have one under construction.  Sonex, Velocity,
Glasair Super II, Several RVs of various incarnations, as well as
ultralight and sport aircraft.

If you can’t make it at least help us wish for good weather.
A copy of the flyer for the breakfast is located at
http://www.rogerhalstead.com/1093News.htm . Just follow the
instructions to download.

Hope to see you there.  I’ll even get the Deb out.

help in finding book

Hello,
Can anyone tell me the name of an aviation book titled something like
"Wild Blue Yonder"?  It is a compilation of chapters from other flying
books. There’s a chapter by Roald Dahl during WWII, a great story about
a Viet Nam fac, one about a guy parachuting through a thunderstorm, etc.

A google search came up with several "Wild Blue Yonders," but not this one.

FAA safety notice on ground ops/TO

FAA  Safety sent an email alert but the link to download the
PDF file was not complete, at least in my email program only
the last part of the link was detected.  The http –.gov
stuff was not detected.  Below is the text of the PDF file,
which can be downloaded from

SAFO

Safety Alert for Operators

U.S. Department SAFO 06013

of Transportation DATE: 9/1/06

Federal Aviation

Administration Flight Standards Service

Washington, DC

http://www.faa.gov/other_visit/aviation_industry/airline_operators/ai…

A SAFO contains important safety information and may include
recommended action. SAFO content should be

especially valuable to air carriers in meeting their
statutory duty to provide service with the highest possible
degree

of safety in the public interest.

Subject: Flight crew techniques and procedures that enhance
pre-takeoff and takeoff safety

Purpose: To provide techniques, procedures and items for
consideration in training programs

that emphasize safe operations in the pre-takeoff and
takeoff phases of flight.

Background: The recent tragic accident of a commuter jet
taking off from the wrong runway

brings into sharp focus the importance of maintaining
situational awareness and adherence to

crew resource management procedures. It is important to note
that many airports are involved in

construction activities that result in changing
environments. This heightens the importance of

pilot vigilance.

There are many other factors that can distract a pilot and
cause the loss of situational awareness.

Even subtle distractions could demand a share of the pilot’s
workload, such as dealing with

company procedures, passengers, running late and even
personal issues.

It is imperative that flight crews maintain the highest
levels of airmanship discipline and crew

resource management. This is especially significant during
the critical phases of flight, takeoff

and landing. In this vein, this SAFO provides the following
reminders:

Reminders of Existing FAA Aircraft Ground Operation
Guidance:

. As part of preflight planning review airport layouts and
know airport signage

. Review Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) for information on
runway/taxiway closures and

construction areas

. During taxi operations have a current airport diagram
readily available for reference and

check the assigned taxi route against the diagram, paying
special attention to any unique

or complex intersections

. Write down complex taxi instructions. When unsure of the
taxi route request progressive

taxi instructions from ATC

. If the flight has more than one crewmember, it is
important that both fully understand taxi

clearances and runway assignments

. During taxi operations the pilots’ maximum attention
should be placed upon maintaining

situational awareness. The pilot taxiing should have his
attention focused outside the

aircraft at all times while the other pilot should monitor
the taxi progress by reference

with the airport diagram and give guidance to the taxiing
pilot.

Approved by AFS-200 Page 2

. Apply crew resource management procedures to:

o Identify and resolve conflicting perceptions of ATC
instructions

o Confirm, by using the challenge and response technique,
proper execution of

ATC instructions

o Confirm, using the challenge and response technique, that
the aircraft is actually

positioned on the assigned runway by reference to the
heading indicator

. Use all available resources to ensure the aircraft is
positioned on the proper runway. One

technique for airplanes that are FMS-equipped is to verbally
announce that the proper

runway and departure procedure are selected in the FMS and
that the aircraft heading

agrees with the assigned runway for takeoff.

This SAFO is to remind you that the following references
contain excellent information for

aircraft ground operations:

AC-120-74A, Parts 91, 121, 125 and 135 Flight Crew
Procedures During Taxi

Operations

AC120-71A, Standard Operating Procedures for Flight Deck
Crewmembers

AC 120-51E Crew Resource Management Training

FAA Order 8430.17, Change 5, Paragraph 974 "Crewmember
Procedures and

Responsibilities During Ground Operations In All Weather
Conditions"

FAA Takeoff Safety Training Aid, Pilot Guide to Takeoff
Safety, available through the

National Technical Information Service.

Recommended action: Directors of safety, directors of
operations, trainers, and pilots of

transport category airplanes should be familiar with the
content of this SAFO. They should work

together to ensure that the content of this SAFO is provided
to pilots during ground training, and

is reinforced in flight training, supervised operating
experience, line checks and proficiency

checks.

C-152 Breaks Up In Air

http://www.myrtlebeachonline.com/mld/myrtlebeachonline/15438549.htm

Two folks flew into instrument conditions and tried to fly back out without
success.  Aircraft parts are scattered over a one mile radius.

Very unfortunate.

Suggestions on flight to Key West/Bahamas.

I am considering a flight to Key West and the Bahamas but there still
seesm to be a lot of thunderstorm activity in the south/east now.
Combined with normal haze and it is not appealing to me right now.  I
am used to 50-100 mile visibility so I would prefer to wait until the
thunderstorms are not a widespread event…and ideally with visibility
better than in the summer.

Is October a better time to try this?  Will I have to wait until a
cold front passes to get better visibility.

No Direct Flights?

I wasn’t too happy when I got the call from AA few minutes ago. I paid top
dollars to get on direct flight from Pittsburgh to Dallas. That flight would
leave first thing in the morning, 7am, I got the called few minutes ago and
was told that my flight was cancelled and they won’t say the real reason
behind all this. Now, I am being forced to fly to New York before I can get
to Dallas. Refund or at least some of it? They simply laughed it off! I feel
that I am being treated as prisoner, NO FREEDOM! This is one of those
reasons that I have to consider owning a plane.

Anyway,  any thought about Airlines’ current operation? Do you think they
cancel on purpose to save bucks because of few seats?
Time for me to hit the sack since I have to get up in few hours.
