About forward slips

What’s the proper procedure to execute a forward slip, how should the
aircraft be expected to react when it is performed, and what are the
main uses of the forward slip?  And why is it called a _forward_ slip?

I’ve been reading about this, and from what I understand, the
procedure is to roll to one side and hold the rudder to the opposite
side.  I’ve tried this in the sim.  The aircraft rolls to the side I’m
rolling it to, and then seems to slide downward almost in the same
plane as the wings, only a bit steeper.  Altitude is lost very quickly
indeed, but airspeed stays steady.  Is this what happens in real life?
Am I doing it correctly?  What’s the correct procedure to return to
level flight?

Somebody said that MSFS cannot simulate forward slips correctly.  What
is missing in the simulation?

Note that, by default, MSFS is configured to link the rudder to the
ailerons.  All turns are forced into coordinated turns, and there’s no
independent rudder control.  This can be turned off to improve
realism.  But with this default option enabled, it’s impossible to
perform any maneuver that requires rudder control independent of
aileron control.

Yes, our new flight simulator cockpit at the hotel — quickly dubbed
"The Kiwi" by its creator — has arrived!

Keith, our A&P (and designer of The Kiwi) is simply remarkable.
Without plans he is able to think and "see" 3-dimensionally, and was
thus able to cut and weld an ergonomically-correct "cockpit" that
incorporated our CH-brand rudder pedals and yoke, along with an
electrically adjustable seat, height-adjustable yoke mount, and wheels
(so that the whole contraption can be moved about easily. Being made
from steel, it is HEAVY) in just a matter of hours!

Most amazing of all — he refused to take any money for creating it,
saying that he just "threw it together" from "old parts laying around
the hangar"…    THAT is true friendship.

We’re not doing Movie Night tonight, due to Halloween, so I can’t WAIT
until the formal "unveiling" of our flightless bird at next Tuesday’s
showing!

Edward Scott Cragg IV; Pork Face is a crying PUSSY!

Hey Edward Scott Cragg IV (Pork butt face), can’t take the heat you
stupid MF’er?  Your threats mean absolutely nothing to me whatsoever!  
Why, you may ask?

Wasn’t it you who initiated contact with the person who posted some
information about Belfort???  And wasn’t it you who responded with an
attack against him???  And wasn’t it you who them slammed this Kukucka
guy, his Brother, and his family???  Yes, this was all you!  Not one
contacted you first and found you to attack you!  So, in effect, you
brought all of this on for you and your family by your big f*ckin mouth!  
Let me tell you, you post in a public newsgroup!  If you do not want such
attacks, you should watch whom you attack!  And, then when you attack
someone, you should know whom you are attacking rather than attacking
anyone.  From my perspective, Kukucka and his family has a case against
you right now!  You attaked him and his family along with your male pimp
Michael Balwin Bruce!  And as you were told, Michael has done such things
before!  You fell right into his hands, and you are an *ss for doing so!

Also, you are a real P*ssy, because you intitiated attacks by your posts,
attacked other people based on an assuption, and want to cry foul when it
effects you or your family!  Yeah, the courts shall rule in your favor!  
Your citing of the laws is fruitless and meaningless!  You are not free
to attack others and then claim your innocent!  And, F*ck You and your
conscience!  You knew what you were doing when you did it, and you
attacked others without caring whom you dragged into your little feeble
world!  May I advise you that your actions were well documented long
ago!  And based on this, action was taken and shall be taken against you
for your attacks of innocent individuals!

As I stated earlier, you are an outright P*ssy!  Your also a hypocrite
since you feel you are better than others!  You felt you could attack
people and their viewpoints in this discussion group!  Had you left
whomeve posts about Belfort alone, you would not have a problem now,
would you???

So, take your threats, and shove them up your gay *ss and find another
place to interject your Pork Butt Face!  We do not live in the Soviet
Union, and this is a public forum to post whatever one chooses to!  No
one posted anything about you and your Pork faced family until you
initiated attacks upon a belief of yours!  this was your critical
mistake!  and as far as harassment, do you receive personal emails or
phone calls from the person who you attacked?  You deserve it!  But, this
then would be harassment!  This is a public forum and you entered and
intiated attacks upon others … deal with it *sshole!  While your at it,
go sue Davis Letterman and the other comedians for all of the people they
slam!

If you want such attacks against you to stop, leave the newsgoup, do not
read it, and do not respond … then, you shall not have a problem!  how
about that you Pork Faced M*ther F*cker!

Frankly, I think you owe the Kukucka family an apology for your wrong
accusations!  May I suggest you write an open apology letter in these
newsgroups which you posted.  Then, I would suggest that you watch what
you post, and whom you attack!  You do not know who I am, nor shall you,
but if you continue with your accusatory attacks of posters, I shall be
all over you like "flies on s*hit"!

And, you failed to learn one important lesson from your pimp Michael
Baldwin Bruce!  He is a good natured person who likes to have fun in a
rather cruel world!  He does not cry foul and make threats which he
cannot back up!  And, you could learn to strengthen your personality so
you do not feel it necessary to attack others for their viewpoints!  
These are forums where people can freely express whatever they like!  If
you play with fire, you shall get burned!  You had no problem trying to
psycho-analyze others but it is your personality which is weak!  If you
really knew whom you were, you wouldn’t feel it necessary to challenge
others in a free society!  You wanted attention and validation of who you
are!  Well, you got it!  Next time, maybe you shall think about the kind
of attention you may receive!  

I suggest that you read this letter carefully, because I and others do
not have a problem whatsoever with continueing this fun exploit!  If you
doubt these words, carry on!  You nor your words, threats, or opinions
bother me in any way!  

Think about it, because the choice is all yours!

Edward Scott Cragg; Read this!

No gloating whatsoever Edward Scott Cragg!  However, I would like you to
personally know that you got it wrong when you accused Kukucka and his
family of such deeds in conjunction with Michael Baldwin Bruce.  I can
also say that you should really think about accusing innocent individuals
of things which you perceive to be correct!

As far as Michael Baldwin Bruce, Kukucka was made aware of him long ago.  
i do not know if he or his family follow along with this group, but
Michael can do as he likes!  However, Michael shall be responded to by
myself and others especially when he accuses innocent people in an
attempt to drag their name through the mud!  Maybe you are the smart one
and wiping your hands of the situation.  But, your remarks to Michael are
inciteful and encouraging such activities.  However, Michael shall be
dealt with if necessary.  Generally, Michael has been good natured from
what I have seen in the newsgroups.  And, like you, I have a life which
demands my time!  Though, when I am able to browse or respond in this
newsgroup or others, I really hate when false baseless accusations are
thrown at individuals who cannot defend themselves.  Or, such individuals
do not have any knowledge of the events, or choose to steer clear of such
nonsense/attacks!

Michael, are you happy now!  You set up another individual!  I also know
your ddefinitely reading this … your predictable!  And Michael, I know
who you are, but you are clueless about me .. simply clueless!  If you
want to go around, this can occur!  However, I really like your normal
stupid demeanor!  I also think picking on individuals when you do not
even know they are responsible is wrong!  Such accusatory behavior can
lead to trouble!  However, when it’s between to agreeing parties and it’s
harmless, I understand!  It’s sort of teasing by the school yard bully!  
In the past, you have named individuals but not hammered them.  Recently,
you have tried to hammer this Kukucka guy and his family, and i think
this is wrong!  You should be careful because there are individuals like
me who like to get in such battles!  I’ll leave it up to you!

How do you find the limits of areas on a chart?

I see tons of restricted areas, MOAs, Class B, C, D, E airspace, and
the like on charts, but no clear indication of how to locate the
boundaries of these areas other than by pure guesstimate based on
looking at the chart.  On rare occasions I see a radial noted as the
boundary of an area, or a radius, but in many cases there is nothing.
How in the world are you supposed to know when you are inside or
outside one of these areas, if you are not flying miles away from
them?

Yes, GPS units and some other devices may provide real-time display of
one’s position with these areas superimposed, but such devices have
not always been available.

How to tell my instructor to increase glidespeed with headwind?

Ok, my instructor did a simulated engine failure in the pattern; winds
were around 20kts in the air and 13kts on the ground. Did everything
perfectly; however after we took off again, he told me to maintain 65
kts next time, and I totally disagreed.
The manual says 65 kts for best glide speed; however that is in calm
air. As a glider person, I know adding about 1/2 the headwind component
will give the greatest distance.
After the flight I pulled up the Glider Flying handbook online and it
says:

"…it is apparent that flying a faster airspeed as the headwind
increases will result in the greatest distance over the
ground. If this is done for the polar curves from many
gliders, a general rule of thumb is found, namely, add
half the headwind component to the best L/D for the
maximum distance."

But even after telling him that he said that doesn’t apply to power
planes, also saying that manuals never give best glide, and there has
to be a reason for that.

Do you guys have any ideas on how I can really convince him? Any good
sources?

Flags of Our Fathers

Saw the new Clint Eastwood-directed take on the famous flag-raising at
Iwo Jima with friends this evening, and enjoyed it immensely.  The
battle scenes are pretty intense, and it’s not the kind of movie you
see if you want a feel-good experience — but it certainly made me
(once again) appreciate the sacrifices my father’s generation made.

Necessary aviation content:  There are some GREAT battle scenes with
Chance-Vought (or, I suppose, Goodyear) F4U Corsairs.

It’s the only movie I’ve been to where the ENTIRE theater stayed to
watch the credits, all the way to the end, without a sound.   It’s
worth seeing.

Flying from Canada into Washington State

I am based in Boundary Bay BC and am thinking of flying south into the
US for the first time. For a flight to BFI what is the best plan? Who do
you talk to and where? What is a good route?

Also I’m interested in Port Townsend. I note it is surrounded by MOA’s.
Are these always active? Is there any way to cross them or must you go
around?

I’m aware of the general rules for crossing the border, but I am looking
for some tips from local pilots.
