overflying Canada along east coast of Lake Huron

I’m considering either a VFR or IFR flight (Piper Arrow) from the
Detroit area, overflying Canada along the east coast of Lake Huron
north and back into the US at Mackinac Island. (MCD)  My route would
be KARB SVM ZR FRUMP YVV WALAC PINES MCD.  This route would take me up
the Bruce Peninsula with a some island hopping then back in the US
around Drummond Island. (DRM)  Canadian overflight, no landing in
Canada.

My question is the lowest altitude required to stay in radio
communication along the route.  Looking at Low level IFR charts it
seems like you would be fine way up in the 10,000 foot range along
airways, but I wonder how I can figure out off airways.  And other
options like position reports if I’m too low for radar but high enough
to stay in communication. (Toronto Center I think)  It would be nice
if I could figure on 4,000 or 5,000.

Any ideas, or experience in this are of Canada?   Thanks … akiley

What happened to the ftp site weather.noaa.gov?

I have a script that generates a custom web page of TAFs and METARs for
airports that I’m interested in so I can quickly access that information
from my Treo.  I just noticed that it’s been broken since late January
because it’s unable to ftp to weather.noaa.gov.  Does anybody know if that
site is gone for good or just moved?  I know Rick "Man on Dog" Santorum
was trying to prevent the NOAA from giving us the weather information we
paid them to collect, but he’s out now so I was hoping that particular bit
of political idiocy was over.

Why does Toronto need a 65nm mode-c veil?

According to "Fly With Blake",
http://fly.blakecrosby.com/2007/03/toronto_airspace_changes_expla.html
the YYZ "Class C Mode C" airspace stretches out to 26nm, and now they are
going to make the ring from 26nm out to 65nm from 6,500MSL to 12,500MSL
"Class E Mode C", meaning you don’t need a clearance, but you need to be
squawking mode C.  Does this seem slightly ridiculous to you?  I can get
to within 30nm of airports like JFK and LAX without a Mode C, and I bet
they handle more traffic on a slow Sunday than YYZ handles all week.
Where is the need for this air space grab?

Do Canadian pilots get as upset about needless airspace grabs as American
ones?  Or are they resigned to this being the best that they can get?

The Boeing Year

If you live in a country that does DD/MM/YY, then this year is
Boeing’s year.  Let me explain.

April 7, 2007 7/4/07 will be 747
May 7, 2007 7/5/07 will be 757
June 7, 2007 7/6/07 will be 767
July 7, 2007 7/7/07 will be 777 – the best one of them all!
August 7, 2007 will be 787
Boeing should rollout the 787 on this day!  But alas, no.
January 7, 207 7/1/07 was 717
February 7, 2007 7/2/07 was 727
March 7, 2007, 7/3/07 was – 737

Helicopter crashes in Hawaii

A Hell-USA Helicopter crashed at Princetown Thursday, killing the pilot
and three passengers. Then yesterday a Smoky Mountain Tours helicopter
crashed on Kauai. One person died of a heart attack, so the news media
are saying that it was a fatal crash.

There have been something like 8 helicopter crashes in four years in
Hawaii, resulting in new regulations, many of them extremely silly and
having nothing to do with the crashes, for tour operators all over the
US. There have been calls for many more. I am not sure what sort of new
regulation will keep passengers dying of heart attacks; it seems to me
that if someone is so fragile that a crash will cause a heart attack
that it could have happened just about anywhere or anytime.

These crashes are terrible tragedies, but I don’t know how new
regulations would prevent them.
