props: tractor v pusher, q tip, ducted?

If one uses the Cessna 377 Skymaster as an example, it’s pretty clear
a pusher prop is more efficient than one pulling. The data seems mixed
though on q tip props — any leads as to where there may be quantative
data? What I found suggested the extra length of the prop might just
as well go to increasing its radius as in decreasing end vortix
effects. Finally, does anyone know of any work on small airplanes
using a ducted prop (shrouding it rather than using the q tip bent
end? I’m not worried about ease of flying (the problem with pusher
props are pretty obvious) but rather with converting the horsepower
delivered to the prop into usable thrust, that is, getting the
greatest efficiency (miles per gallon is a crude way of expressing it)
for a small single.

Physics Quiz Question

Brought over from RAS:

Assuming that all other variables remain constant:

An increase in temperature will result in a higher atmospheric pressure – a
higher temperature speeds up the movement of the air molecules, thereby
raising the pressure they exert on the surrounding atmosphere.

A) True
B) False

FAA Shares Radar with Whom?

"FAA Primary En Route Long Range Radar Restructuring Program
The FAA currently uses and supports 126 primary en route radar
facilities. The FAA is chartered to provide Primary radar services to
all federal agencies requiring this data to meet their operational
missions."
 http://www.faa.gov/asd/ia-or/longrangeradar.htm

With whom does the FAA share radar?  I would understand the military,
but that’s about it.  My impression is that weather radar works with
different frequencies and uses doppler.  So with whom does the FAA
share radar information?

When do politicians rate a TFR?

In an amazing (disgusting, IMHO) display of political hackery (Yep,
that’s a word, now) the State of Iowa is being flooded with every
potential presidential candidate, despite the fact that the election
is not until November — of 2008!

Iowa City in particular has been targeted by Hillary and Obama, to the
point where I wouldn’t be surprised if they applied for residency.  It
seems like they have been here every other week — and now the
Republican candidates are following suit.

Having been unpleasantly surprised by a TFR back when John Edwards was
running as a VP candidate (I was on the ground, thankfully, but
couldn’t get to my plane, thanks to the SS), we now live in fear of
pop-up TFRs here on a daily basis.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any information on precisely
whom is eligible for a TFR.  Is this a rule that’s written down
anywhere?

Query on Geo Pilot GPS

I just got the AvShop.com weekly flier spam and noticed an old portable GPS
I had looked at a while back. Nice color and Victor Airways, but seemed to
be directed at the Euro Market so I passed it up.
Now the new Geo Pilot claims Weather with just an "antenna option". Anyone
have experience with this model, likes & misses? Most importantly, what’s
the detail on the weather option? Is it a built in XM reciever (aka 396) so
I only need an antenna, or do I need to buy the whole XM reciever-antenna
box and interface it (aka the PDA)?

Flying to / in Ireland

Hello,

I own & fly a PA34 Seneca in France.
I plan to fly to Ireland in August, and spend a couple of days there.

As I’m planning my trip, I’m looking for specific GA information, such
as the taxes & other costs associated with the different airports.

In particular, it would be convenient for me to land in Dublin EIDW,
but I’m afraid of the costs of handling, of parking (seems to be 8€+
per hour !) and renting a vehicule (to be allowed to get to/from your
plane on the apron : 46€!)

Anyone here could share his/her first hand experience ?

Thanks
YAG
