Random data from a Cessna Pilots Ass'n. forum, etc.

================

"I spoke with Steve Knopp, owner of Pponk http://www.pponk.com/ this morning.
He commented that business was a bit slow and he had two complete engines
sitting on the floor waiting for any customer that wishes an exchange engine.
Now might be a good time to nab one."

"As an aside, I asked why business was slow for him. He replied that nearby
Paine Field, a rather large G.A. airport, http://www.painefield.com/ had
reported that take-offs and landings were down 35% compared to the previous
year. If guys aren’t flying much they don’t need new engines. Anyway, that is
his thinking."

I took my airplane to Teledyne Continental’s shop this morning to have the
prop dynamically balanced.  When I called them yesterday to ask when they
could get to it, the foreman told me "Bring it on in; we don’t have much
going on."

A380 Fly-by!

This morning, at ~ 0800 EDT, I got to watch the A380 make a low pass
of a Pratt & Whitney facility, complete with a wing wave!

Damn…  That thing is BIG.  (Coming from a guy who regularily sees
C-5′s in flight!).

Burns Municipal Airport (KBNO) Runway 3-21 Markings

I have been using Google Earth to look at airports in my area of the
world, and I have run across something that I cannot figure out myself, so I
thought I would post this question here. I was looking at Burns Municipal
Airport ,Oregon (KBNO) at N43  35 25.77  W118  57  18.41 and noticed that
runway 3-21 is painted completely white. Even the runway numbers and
thresholds are painted over. I have never seen this type of runway marking
before. I tried doing a Google search on that airport, but haven’t come up
with anything that indicates why this runway is painted like this. Usually
when an airport closes a runway, they paint a big "X" on the runway ends to
indicate that it is closed. Does anyone have any idea why they would paint
an entire runway white like this? Just curious…

Backwash Causes Lift?

Hi,

Student pilot here, self-teaching using the Jeppensen Private Pilot
Kit after taking ground school. :D

I read in the book that combustion "creates" energy, which is
technically not true, but I decided to ignore it since the pictures
are sooo pretty.

Now, in Chapter 3, section about airfoils, it actually says:

"In addition to the lowered pressure, a downward-backward flow of air
also is generated from the top surface of the wing. The reaction to
this downwash results in an upward force on the wing which demnstrates
Newtons’ third law of motion.  This action/reaction principle also is
apparent as the airstream strikes the lwoer surface of the wing when
inclinded at a small angle (the angle of attack) to its direction of
motion. The air is forced downward and therefore causes an upward
reaction resulting in positive lift."

IMHO, the latter part of this paragraph is correct, but the former
part is wrong.

Obviously, any air above the wing can only result in a force downward
on top of the wing.  The only force causing the plane to want to move
upward comes from beneath the wing.  The effect of any air above the
wing is to cause rarefication above the wing, resulting in lower
pressure, thereby giving the 14.7lbs/in^2 (plus) to do its work. That
"reaction" coming from downward movement of air seems just plain silly
to me.

I am also inclined to take issue with the explanations of Bernouilli’s
Principle which I see often in the literature, but that’s a different
subject.  [Note, I don't doubt Bernouilli's Principle, I just think
there is more to it than the way it is being described in context of
flying.]

Boeing gives Chicago $10-million

In light of Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley’s March 31, 2003 illegal
midnight raid on Meigs Airport
<http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/newsitems/2003/03-1-157x.html> which
resulted in the closing of the airport and FAA fines for the city,
this is a little ironic:

Boeing Donates $10 Million to Science Education at Chicago Museums

CHICAGO, Oct. 02, 2007 — The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] is
contributing
$10 million to support science education for Chicago area youth.

The donation will be split equally between Chicago’s Adler Planetarium
and the Museum of Science and Industry where the money will be used to
create educational exhibits and programming that will inspire young
people to pursue careers in areas associated with science and
technology.

Rick Stephens, Boeing senior vice president, Human Resources and
Administration, joined Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley in announcing
the education investment during the kick-off event of Science in the
City, a series of city-wide events that invite residents to experience
various fields of science and raise awareness of its importance to
Chicago’s past, present and future. Boeing is among the sponsors of
the events.

"Boeing is pleased to be able to support these two great Chicago
institutions in their continuing efforts to educate, engage and
motivate children to explore the world around them, and the stars
above," said Stephens. "This investment will help ensure our future
workforce is inspired to launch the next generation of discoveries,
innovations and inventions in the areas of science, math and
technology."

At the Museum of Science and Industry, Boeing’s gift will help create
an innovative exhibition that will invite museum guests to experience
events in historical and present-day exploration. Scheduled to open in
2011, the new exhibition also will provide educational programming and
information about career paths. The gift to the Adler will help fund
the development of new exhibitions geared to young visitors and
families as well as an endowment to support science and math education
initiatives at the planetarium.

"Boeing is a long-standing leader in the areas of innovation and
exploration so we are especially honored and humbled by their generous
support. Their gift will have a significant impact on the Museum’s
vision to motivate and inspire our children to achieve their full
potential in the areas of science, technology, engineering and
medicine," said David Mosena, president and CEO of the Museum of
Science and Industry.

"In the years ahead, the Adler will inspire the next generation of
explorers," said Paul H. Knappenberger Jr., president of the Adler
Planetarium. "We are especially grateful to Boeing for a commitment to
motivating young people to understand the important role science and
math will play in their futures."

The two contributions complete a capital investment plan in Chicago
announced in 2005 with grants to The Boeing Galleries in Millennium
Park and the Muntu African Dance Theatre’s Performing Arts Center to
be constructed in the Bronzeville neighborhood on Chicago’s South
Side. These capital investments complement Boeing’s ongoing global
corporate citizenship program in Chicago, which continues to emphasize
investment in programs that focus on innovation, collaboration and
diversity.

Mag compass adjustment

My mag compass is way off.  Any ideas on the correct way to adjust it with
the little screws.  I don’t have a compass rose so I plan to use my old boy
scout compass to set the headings.

I have been told point it North, and take out half of the amount, then point
it South and take out half  the amount.  Then repeat for East and West.

Anybody with first hand experience please speak up.

Jay & Mary mentioned in AOPA Pilot

I got the new AOPA Pilot mag in the mail yesterday, and saw a mention
of Jay & Mary H while scanning one of the articles. The Alexis Park
Inn got a mention too. Anybody else read this?
