Wondering about specific (company) recommendations where people have been
satisfied etc. Also general costs involved for a new Private Pilot
flying 172′s. But particularly the former, even with Tel # etc. if
possible.

After talking to a lot of renters, I went with Avemco (probably the most
widely recognized). After comparing their prices with others (even some
no-name co.’s), they seemed to be in line with the rest of the industry,
and the peace of mind that you get with a large provider was worth any
extra cost.
Basically, there are two main parts that you can purchase…
1. Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability
Liability protection for you against claims for bodily injury
(including death) and damage to other’s property not in your care or
custody. Not included are claims for damage to the rented or borrowed
aircraft. Also not included are claims by passengers if you are a
student pilot.
2. Aircraft Damage Liability
Liability protection for you for damage to the aircraft if you are
renting or borrowing. This includes loss of its use and the owner’s
deductible. A guideline in the selection of your Aircraft Damage
Liability policy limit would be the value of the non-owned aircraft you
usually fly. If you want Aircraft Damage Liability, you must also
purchase the Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability part.
I primarily rent 172s and older Archers.
On the Bodily/Property section, I purchased limits of $25,000 each
person, $250,000 property damage, and $250,000 each accident. Total
premium per year is $50. On the Aircraft Damage section, I purchased a
$25,000 limit for $250 per year.
So I pay about $300 per year for both sections.
Avemco can be reached at 1-800-638-8440.
regards,
Gary

Absolutely right! This is the "default cheap" National/Avemco quote.
If your wife is hurt, how long will $5,000 keep her in the hospital?
Perhaps only a few hours. After that, you’ll be on your own.
AAU, AIG and American Eagle have no family exclusions, their minimum
coverage is $100,000 per passenger with no "per person" limit, and you
can get $1,000,000 "smooth" (with no per pax limits, although the premium
almost doubles). USAIG has no "per pax" or "per person" limits. That
covers some real-life hospital and disability costs. If you were ever
sued, they’re gonna be there protecting their million, not paying off,
walking away and leaving you to hire your own lawyer.
Note the low-ball "per person" limit on your National/Avemco policy. If
you taxi into a pedestrian, or crash into their house, it applies. There
is no "per person" limit on a good policy, although you might elect to
accept a "per passenger" limit for the lower premium.
I asked National/Avemco to quote competitive coverage limits, and they
quoted a higher premium than these better insurers! Also in the fine
print they have an "FAR violation exclusion", and a reputation for being
slow to pay while they try to find a way to use it to deny a claim.
There is more to insurance than the premium… shop around (I have been,
as you might guess). National/Avemco are popular because they quote
low… but you may find that their coverage is low and slow, too?

Does it matter? Are you planning to have an accident? ;—)
