It only took one trip in the airplane after I activated the XM entertainment
channels for me to become hooked.
I’ve started taking the thing in the car with me on driving trips, but I hate
wearing headphones in the car. How can I get the audio output from the 396
into my car’s audio system?

Yeah, but $30 is astronomical for one of these. Go to Walmart and get
it for $15.

Headphones in the car are illegal in Virginia.

Dan,
Aside from a hard-wired connection into your car audio system, a
cassette adapter is the next best option. The FM transmitters are the
least desirable for audio quality, but they do work if you have no other
option.

…make a bunch of interfaces designed to add XM or line-in or IPod
capability to various cars. It will be more expensive (parts +
installation) this way than buying an FM transmitter, but much better sound
quality.
