otter & king air

Will an Otter and a King Air operate out of a 2000 foot paved
runway on a hot day?  Any body know the accelerate stop distance at gross
for both aircraft? (estimate)  The altitude is 500 msl.  Kyle

    Kyle,

I pulled the figures for a King Air B200, so can not give you any idea
for a KingAir 90/300/350/etc. nor the Otter.  Per Beech’s literature, the
B200 takeoff data (with flaps 40%, standard day @ full gross 12,500#)
shows a ground roll of 1856 feet, with a takeoff distance over a 50 ft
    obstacle being 2579 ft.

With this data, I wouldn’t want to try the KingAir off a 2000 foot strip
(even on a cold day) <g>.

The semi-STOL de Havilland Otter will get off the ground in less than
2,000 feet, but it doesn’t do much after that.  The R-1340 has a
one-minute limitation on the use of full power.  The engine then has to be
backed off to the point where it is developing less than 400 horsepower
which at full gross weight yields a climb rate only slighty better than
100 feet per minute at a reasonable airspeed.  A far better solution, and
one which many floatplane operators are going to, is the Vazar Dash-3
Otter turbine conversion, which replaces the R-1340 with a Pratt & Whitney
PT6A-135 750 shaft horsepower turbine. There are no structural changes to
the plane aft of the firewall.  The takeoff figures for a Vazar Dash-3 ON
FLOATS are: takeoff water run- 900 feet.  Takeoff over 50-foot
obstacle-1,725 feet.  Climb (sea level)- 1,200 feet per minute.  I’ve
flown one, and it’s impressive, plus you get the Beta (reversing)
propeller.  I can’t help you with the King Air, and I don’t know the
accelerate-stop distance of an Otter on wheels.

No one has responded on the Otter but I can give you a personal
observation.  My glider club shares the field with a large sky diving operation
that has a twin otter.  The field is 2800 ft paved.  beyond the departure
end of the runway is a turf dogleg, about 1500 ft, lined by trees.  On hot
summer days we sometimes see the loaded otter (about 22 jumpers) fly into
the dogleg, out of sight below the tree line.  They’ve always managed to
get over the trees by the end of the dogleg…. so far.
