VFR Sectional Mural

Our airport terminal has a VFR Sectional Mural of the United States,
taking up one entire wall of the pilot lounge. I’ve searched online, but
can’t find such a product. Does anyone know if it exists or where to
find it?

Kyler Laird has a web site that contains hi-res scans of sectional
charts and the software to stitch them together.  You can do a Google
Groups search, or perhaps he’ll respond to this message thread.

Search for the JNCA-5 chart. It doesn’t take up the whole wall but is good
    size.

Painted or multiple images glued together? Some of these new flat bed
printers can put out some great stuff.

It is a shame that everybody at the airport died and none of the new
folks have any idea where or the mural came to be.

Yeah, but it’s so old certain areas says "Here dwell dragons".

Just individual sections of charts. Our airport has IFR sectionals to
make up such a map. They just trim the white parts off, then start
pasting. You’ll notice that not everything matches up, due to trying to
map the curve of the earth on a flat sheet of paper.

I’m trying to do something similiar with VFR sectionals on one my living
room walls, more or less centered on the area I fly. Covers a good
    section of the upper midwest.

Note that if the wall map you see really is of VFR sectionals, your FBO
must have some really tall walls. Mine starts with the northern Green
Bay sectional and ends with the southern chicago sectional, about 4
charts high. I have room for most of the northern parts of the Kansas,
St Louis, and Cincinnati sectionals at the bottom (anyone have any
unmarked expired sectionals of these they can part with?).
From the eastern end, I have the detriot and lake huron sectionals, and
the westernmost end has the twin cities northern chart, and below that
is a doorway, with parts of the TC and omaha charts going up to the
    doorway.

I can only imagine what a full US map made of VFR sections would look
    like, just HUGE!

Yeah, I’ve done one on my wall that is JUST Arizona, and I love it. But
this one at the airport is the whole U.S., and they aren’t full-size
sectionals or, as you said, it would never fit. I see you can buy a
"full set" of sectionals, 38 of them, for $200+ dollars, but again, they
would have to be reduced to fit all on one wall. We tried making one of
our area and some of CA and the surrounding area with one of those chart
*books*, but the pieces are only about 12 x 14, and the further out you
get, the less they match up. Just thought maybe there was a full U.S.
sectional mural available for purchase. Kind of surprised there isn’t
… would seem it would sell.

Thanks to all for responding. I’m going to keep digging for a little
    while anyway.

This might work. They have 3 chart sets that cover the entire US

          VFR/IFR Planning charts
          large JNC-A charts
          larger JNC charts
          largest
east on one side/ west on the other
          40" x 36" each side
          (full USA – 72" x 40")
          scale – 1:3.4 million

          airports, cities, VOR airways
          special use airspace
          mileage
          no terrain features
$4.75 full USA – one chart
          42" x 58"
          scale – 1:3 million

          multi color terrain
          airports, elevations
          cities, lakes, rivers
          some roads
          special use airspace
          $5.75 full USA – on 3 charts
          57" x 40" each chart
          (full USA – 57" x 120")
          scale – 1:2 million

          multi color terrain
          airports, elevations
          cities, waterways, roads
          special use airspace
          $5.75

I’ll bet that they are World Aeronautical Charts (WACs).  I’ve done
    whole wall WAC paste-ups before.

Then it may be made of of WACs instead of sectionals. A full set for the
    continental U.S. costs about $88.

Next time you see this mural, look for Unicom frequencies. WACs don’t have those.

I have these…buy them while they can… I think NGA is going to stop
making these available in paper form.

The best chart was the old IFR/VFR wall charts that NOAA used to make,
but they stopped producing them some time ago.   These were neat because
they came in two sections so you could hang up either the entire country
IFR, the entire country VFR, or IFR and VFR together for half the country.

There was a guy at Oshkosh who mosaics sectionals together and prints
them on large format (HP) printers.  I could do this at work (I have
the printer and the software to do this is what I do for a living).

For printing…well, you’d want to do some "special stuff".

Note that my DVD sectionals subscription lapsed.  I’m working with

That’s quite a mural.  Just the 48 contiguous states would make it about 19
feet high and 28 feet wide.

:-)  The wall is probably 10′ high and 15′ long. It’s not full-size
sectionals, I know. Just wondered if you could purchase it as a mural or
if someone painstakingly put it together … it’s actually glued to the
wall like wallpaper, if you used charts, would seem the backside would
    come through.

Yeah, I was pretty sure it wasn’t made from sectionals, but Sectional
Aeronautical Charts come in only one size, 1:500,000.  Your dimensions
indicate the mural is made from World Aeronautical Charts, which are
    1:1,000,000 scale.

Sectionals are also available with the backside blank.  They come in a
rolled tube, the north and south halves of the common folded sectional are
printed on the same side one above the other.  You might consider using a
few of those to make a detailed regional mural along with a JNCA-5 Planning
Chart that shows the 48 contiguous states.  The planning chart is
    1:3,000,000 scale, about 3 1/2 by 6 feet.

Dont know about that but they have such a mural at Midlleton, Wi (c29)
which I think was done with actual sectionals.

Its only about 6 months old and looks teriffic.

I may have given you false hope, they may not be available to the general
public.  FAA Order 1720.23C, dated 9/26/1984, describes the charts and how
FAA users can obtain them.  To my knowledge that’s the most recent version
of the order.  I’ll post some portions of it below, the charts I’m referring
to are described as "translucent" in the order.

Sectional Charts (SEC) provide topographic and aeronautical information for
VFR navigation by slow-to-medium-speed aircraft. Flat charts are available.
Also, a special printing on one side of translucent, untrimmed paper is
available at the time a sectional chart is printed. No shelf stock of the
translucent charts is maintained. Scale 1:500,000 (1 inch = 6.86 nmi).

    g. If flat (nonfolded) copies of individual charts are wanted, type or print
"FLAT" directly on the form adjacent to the appropriate product/s.

    h. If translucent copies of Sectional Charts are wanted, type or print
"TRANSLUCENT" directly on the form adjacent to the appropriate product.
