I’ve been looking on purchasing a new headset for use in my Pitts that
will reduce the amount of noise picked up by the microphone when I
broadcast on the radio. I’m currently using a Pilot Avionics PA11-40
with an electret mike. Would a headset with a dynamic microphone help
reduce the amount of noise picked up?

The only difference is that a dynamic mike generates all of its own
current and an electret mike requires a small charge from an external
source to power it. Electret mikes are typically higher quality and more
sensitive. Neither one will substantially reduce noise over the other
type.
The key is to find a mic that has two elements, one pointing AWAY from
you, such as the mic used in the David Clark 13.4 model. The two are
wired up in inverse phase with each other, and so what actually gets
transmitted is noise that’s on one side but not on the other. This
typically means your voice gets transmitted loud and clear but
omnidirectional ambient noise is cut down a lot. Cellular phones
typically use the same technology.

Well, as far as frequency response (voice range) and intelligibility of
the transmitted voice, both the Dynamic and Electret mics are excellent.
However, for noise cancellation (and shock resistance) the electret mic
is much better. The electret mics are much smaller and lighter
(although generally more expensive). They also provide better EMI
immunity, and are about equal with Dynamic mics for RFI immunitiy (VHF).
Overall, Dynamic mics have been known for their reliability, and
electret mics have been known for their overall better performance.

DEFINITELY don’t go with the dynamic mike! The electret mike is a noise
canceling type microphone and is a much more modern design than the less
expensive and noisy/old technology dynamic. If your current electret
microphone doesn’t have the foam ‘pop’ filter cover that also helps
eliminate noise (it may have fallen off), I suggest putting one on
for about $1.50 and securing it with a rubber ‘o’ ring so it doesn’t
fall off.

An electret has its own source for the electric field, a condenser mike
doesn’t.
