Not to mention that it looked like the city was using it as an impound lot
the last time I was in New York.  Kind of sad that it’s gone.  ’Twas the first
place I went and watched airplanes as a kid (from across the street at
Adventurer’s Inn).

Alas, if it were still open it’d be the closest airport to my house in
Bayside, Queens (NYC), but it really is unuseable.  The state of the
runway is terrible; standing water and lots of overgrowth coming up
through the unrepaired cracks.  I wouldn’t even attempt to land a plane
on it.  It’s so bad, you’d be hard pressed to even find it if you
didn’t know where it was.

        Does Flushing airport still exist ? If so its only a few
miles past LaGuardia.

It’s still on the charts (marked as closed), and still in the AFD, with a
note that it’s under redevelopment, but the runways are under water, or
something like that.  From what I gather from the grapevine, the chances of
it ever reopening are pretty slim indeed.

Fairfield County?  Um, I think you’re talking about "Essex County Airport",
which is located in Fairfield, NJ, but which everybody just calls Caldwell.
There is such a place as Fairfield County, but it’s in Connecticut.

Caldwell, yea that’s the place.  Memory is the second thing to go.

Anybody out there from Lincoln Park – they used to have a *GREAT* AP – Tom
Stevens.  He annualed my 310 over night for me one time when I had a schedule
nobody could meet.  Also a CFI, Sam Califioria, or something like that.  I
really liked the neat old time atmosphere there – reminded me of the good ole
days.

Haven’t been in the NYC area for a few years but I always liked Morristown,
Fairfield County or Lincoln Park (particularly Lincoln Park – an old fashion
airport that was fun to fly out of).  Any of them are about 1/2 hour from NYC
but have lodging near by.

As I said, its been a few years so be sure to check and make sure they’re
still around.
